Description

Partially enclosed domain located in the territory of Meerbeke. Surrounded castle, rebuilt during the 20th century, situated amid meadows and beautiful gardens with a tree-lined access avenue on the northeast side of the square (Brusselstraat). First mentioned in the 12th century. Since the 13th century inhabited by the lords of Wedergraete, also known as Contrecur. The medieval fortress was presumably modified in the 18th century, completely rebuilt after a fire at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century. In 1949 adapted and reduced by one floor. Neo-traditional styled castle from the 20th century with a gatehouse and forecourt on preserved sandstone substructures with round corner towers; cellars and foundations made of Spanish brick. Brick gatehouse (Brusselstraat) under a combined roof (slates) on roof list beams from the 18th century. Central basket arch gate fitted with granite imposts and arch framing under a broken gable roof. Lateral wings under a mansard roof with blind arched windows provided with granite corner blocks. To the northeast of the castle, preserved donjon (?), used as a dovecote. Square tower under a truncated gable roof (slates). Brick construction with sandstone used for corner blocks, scaffolding, and shooting holes. Added arched doorways. Also to the northeast, wooden bridge with four natural stone pilasters provided with coat of arms. On the Steenweg Halle-Ninove, additional entrance with gatekeeper’s house and coach house, the latter rhythmically arranged with round-arched arcades, dating from the early 20th century (?).
