The magnificent church of Baardegem already had a precursor in the 13th century. In 1258, Baardegem became an independent parish, and around that time, an early Romanesque aisle church was built. Later, a late Romanesque church emerged, with the choir formed by the older church. In the 14th century, the choir was renovated, and a stair tower was added. In the 15th century, the northern transept arm and the nave were remodeled. In the 16th century, the church was severely damaged by fire. In 1629, the tower was repaired, and around the same time, the interior was modified. In 1666, the southern transept arm, in Baroque style, was completed. In 1750, renovations were carried out in a classical style.
