The Church of St. John the Baptist is the parish church of St. John in Eremo.
The parish of St. John was founded in the early 14th century, but repeated flooding of the sea made this inhospitable area. This village and the church was therefore swallowed up several times by the sea. It was not until the early 1500s that churches were built in these areas again, but the religious disputes at the beginning of the 16th century ensured that this church was not granted a long life.
This church was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century with material from previous churches that stood on this site. Some sources claim that earlier churches were larger and that this church is made up of the still standing choir of an earlier church.
This church is classified as a monument and has a beautiful interior in rococo style. The high altar was made by the Bruges joiner Hendrik Hagheman and dates from 1699. It was made in wood and then painted in marble motif. The communion bench and pulpit were also made by Hendrik Hagheman. On the tub of the pulpit scenes from the life of John the Baptist are depicted.
Around St. John's Day (June 24), this church is still frequented by pilgrims. Then a walk is made around the church, praying along seven stations for mainly agricultural intentions. There will be no more weekly celebrations. Only during the St. John's Days (weekend after June 24) some Eucharistic celebrations take place.
