Since the Treaty of Verdun (843) and well into the Middle Ages, the border region between Dender and the Scheldt has been in a military strategic area. Just think of the history of Ename, the village on the Scheldt near Oudenaarde. The barony of Boelare also owes its existence to its location. Boelare is located in a bend of the Dender, on the left bank in the borough of Nederboelare. Traces of habitation date back to four or five centuries before Christ.
There was a grunt of a castle in which the powerful lords of Boelare lived. To the actual gender of
Boelare came to an end in 1249 with the death of Philip, son of Aleidis. Afterwards, various noble families managed the property. The barony experienced a peak of radiance and power in the middle of the 18th century. Currently, a retirement home is being housed in the historic domain and concerts are held there regularly. In any case, the domain has grandeur. A stately avenue leads you to the green courtyard. Castle, chapel, toll house and some old, beautiful outbuildings are located in the middle of an oasis of water and greenery and some impressive trees. You can't take a look at the courtyard but certainly don't enter the buildings.
