The castle of Rumbeke was once owned by the counts of Flanders. During the thirteenth century, the castle became the property of the lords of Wervik. It was subsequently owned by the families of Lichtervelde, Gistel, and Antoing. The lordship of Rumbeke was sold in 1426 by Jan van Antoing, lord of Briffeuil, to Seger van Langhemeersch. Maria van Langhemeersch married Robert de Thiennes. Thus, the castle became the property of the de Thiennes-van Langhemeersch family. The castle remained in the hands of this family until 1856. After that, the castle with the forest became the property of the de Limburg Stirum family. It is now home to the Professional Association of Bus and Coach Companies of Flanders. Since 1987, it has been the Sterrebos Provincial domain.
