Count Lamoral of Egmont was beheaded in 1568 together with his friend, the Grave of Hoorne, on the Grand Place in Brussels. He was buried in Zottegem. He had a castle there and had a crypt built in the church five years earlier. Anyone who cycles the Egmont route understands why the famous count was so devoted to this region. Among other things, we drive through the green Zwalm valley. The northern part of the Egmont route is flat.
