This walking route starts in provincial domain De Gavers in Geraardsbergen. We walk along the Gaver- and Poelaertplas, the favorite stopping place of dozens of blue herons. We follow the Dender to the manual cable spring, where we are transferred by the ferryman. We walk to Idegem, where we cross the Dender again at the picturesque sas, this time just over a bridge.
ATTENTION
The timetable of the pedestrian and bicycle ferry across the Dender near the Provincial Domain De Gavers in Idegem will change in 2008. From now on, the Denderveer will only sail from May to September on Sundays and public holidays from 1 pm to 7 pm. Service on weekdays and Saturdays in July and August is no longer available. Unfortunately, this new regulation has far-reaching consequences for our newly renewed Heron Walking Route, which starts in domain De Gavers and uses the ferry service. The Heron Route will therefore only be walkable in a greatly shortened form. Only on Sunday afternoons and on public holidays from May to September can the entire route be walked.
