Edouard Remy

Founded to the west within the square zone, as a tribute to this important 19th-century Leuven politician and industrialist - founder of the well-known rice and starch factory in Wijgmaal -, social benefactor, patron, and founder of various philanthropic institutions. The monument was designed by architect Victor Horta (1861-1947), a key figure of Belgian Art Nouveau; the sculpture is credited to the well-known Brussels sculptor Pieter Braecke (1858-1938), a friend of Horta. It was executed in blue hard stone, granite, and bronze: a stepped base with a wide plinth and a high base element on which a sculpted bust and the inscription "Edouard Remy - 1813-1896" are placed. On either side is a social evocation with allegorical figures of women, men, and children, depicting the following inscriptions from left to right: "Bouchée de pain - Ouvriers sans travail - Hospice des incurables - Asile de nuit - Crèche - Oeuvres Scolaires". Surrounding it is a partly tree-lined park that is bordered by a granite curb with refined cast iron railings.
