In the valley of the Gobertangebeek in Malen, you can find the Gobertange sandstone, which was excavated on a small scale centuries ago as a building material. The stone benches have a thickness of 10 to 30 cm. Typically, the pits had a depth of 15 m, but sometimes work was done at depths of up to 25 m. Usually, the excavation began with the lower stone bench. For this purpose, the miner dug out a first gallery over a length of about 1.20 m. A good pit could provide work for 2 workers for about 4 years. The last pit, which was mined in the manner described above, was dug in 1955.
