The 10-hectare park was open to the public in 1880 after an unpopular zoo was removed. During the following years, a campus for the famous Solvay School of Commerce was established. The building of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences is also located in the park. Also, the Mundaneum of Paul Otelet, the forerunner of the Internet, was moved here in 1940. It remained here until it was forced to move again in 1972, well after Otlet''s death.
