The Augustinian fathers did well more than just preaching and saving souls back in the day. In their monastery in Ghent, they brewed their own beer since 1295. Officially because it was safer to drink beer than water full of bacteria, but we know better: the brew was already pleasing to God, the fathers, and little Pierke. Brewery Van Steenberge from Ertvelde acquired the recipe, refined it, and launched 'Augustijn' on the market in 1982. Saint Rita and lovers of fine beer are still fully grateful to them every day. In this Meetjesland brewery, the craft has been passed down for six generations. Here, Augustijn and Gouden Draak are brewed, among others. Visits by appointment only.
