Les Pères Augustins faisaient alors bien plus que prêcher et sauver des âmes. Dans leur monastère à Gand, ils brassaient leur propre bière depuis 1295. Officiellement, parce qu'il était plus sûr de boire de la bière que de l'eau pleine de bactéries, mais nous savons mieux : le breuvage plaisait déjà à Dieu, aux pères et au petit Pierke. La brasserie Van Steenberge d'Ertvelde a acquis la recette, l'a perfectionnée et a mis 'Augustijn' sur le marché en 1982. Sainte Rita et les amateurs de bonne bière leur en sont encore reconnaissants chaque jour. Dans cette brasserie du Meetjesland, ils transmettent le métier depuis six générations. Ici, on brasse notamment Augustijn et Gouden Draak. Visites uniquement sur rendez-vous.
