Mater is located in the Flemish Ardennes. Outside the village center, Mater mainly consists of lands, meadows, and fields, all situated on a very hilly, undulating terrain.
The village has a large square, the Matersplein, where the 18th-century St. Martin's Church is located.
According to tradition, Amelberga was pursued in the early 8th century by Charles Martel, after whom a street name refers. She took refuge in Mater and miraculously created the springs named after her by scooping water from the well of a local miserly farmer with a sieve and letting it drip onto a field. The St. Amelberga Chapel is said to be on the same site where Amelberga's hut stood, although no archaeological work has been carried out to verify this theory to date.
