Saint Eligius

Oldest mention, probably of a wooden church, in 1087. Original stone church ascending to the 14th century. Late Gothic three-aisled cruciform church with an exceptionally beautiful octagonal crossing tower of Balegem stone, probably from the 14th to 15th centuries. Western construction renewed in the 15th or 16th century; polygonal apse with five pointed arch windows and sacristy in the second half of the 17th century. In 1687 construction of side choirs. Repairs and modifications in the course of the 18th century. In 1763 floor of Tournai stone, vaulted in 1769. Restored in 1837 and 1893, the latter mentioned by architect Auguste Van Assche. Blown up in 1940 and totally rebuilt after the war by architect Henri Vaerwyck-Suys (Sint-Amandsberg). Near the church is a Marian grotto.
