Did you know that the first vaccination against smallpox was administered in Ostend in 1800? This happened fairly quickly after the British country doctor Edward Jenner announced in 1798 that milkmaids could contract cowpox but not the dangerous smallpox. Cowpox was a milder form of the human variant and made those women immune to smallpox. By vaccinating healthy people with cowpox, they were protected for life. Even then, there was a lot of opposition to vaccination.
