Wist je dat in 1800 in Oostende de eerste inenting tegen de pokken toegediend werd. Dat gebeurde vrij snel, nadat de Britse plattelandsarts Edward Jenner in 1798 had bekendgemaakt dat melkmeisjes wel de koepokken konden krijgen, maar niet de gevaarlijke mensenpokken. De koepokken waren een mildere vorm van de menselijke variant en maakten die vrouwen immuun tegen de pokken. Door gezonde mensen in te enten met de koepokken waren ze levenslang beschermd. Ook toen was er veel tegenkanting tegen de vaccinatie.
