Wusstest du, dass 1800 in Ostende die erste Impfung gegen die Pocken verabreicht wurde? Das geschah recht schnell, nachdem der britische Landarzt Edward Jenner 1798 bekannt gemacht hatte, dass Melkmädchen zwar die Kuhpocken bekommen konnten, aber nicht die gefährlichen Menschenpocken. Die Kuhpocken waren eine mildere Form der menschlichen Variante und machten diese Frauen immun gegen die Pocken. Durch die Impfung gesunder Menschen mit den Kuhpocken waren sie lebenslang geschützt. Auch damals gab es viel Widerstand gegen die Impfung.
