Zwalm is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality has over 7500 inhabitants.
Zwalm is a merged municipality, which consists of 12 sub-municipalities, namely Beerlegem, Dikkele, Hundelgem, Meilegem, Munkzwalm, Nederzwalm-Hermelgem, Paulatem, Roborst, Rozebeke, Sint-Blasius-Boekel, Sint-Denijs-Boekel and Sint-Maria-Latem. The 12 small stars in the flag of the merged municipality refer to these boroughs. The merged municipality was formed in 1977 from the merger of Groot-Munkzwalm and Nederzwalm-Hermelgem. The borough of Nederzwalm-Hermelgen was created in the mid-19th century when Nederzwalm and the smaller Hermelgem merged. In Sint-Denijs-Boekel lies the small hamlet of Wijlegem.
