The area that now spans Sint-Lievens-Houtem was divided into two in the Middle Ages. One part was managed by the Sint-Baafsabdij of Ghent, the other belonged to the Land of Aalst, with its own four scissors. The village had an important pilgrimage and annual market in the Middle Ages. This Sint-Lievens pilgrimage was held on 29 June and commemorated the transfer of the relics of Sint-Lieven from the village to the Sint-Baafsabdij. Under Charles V, pilgrimage was abolished.
