The creator of Jommeke, Jef Nys (1927-2009), had quite a bit of family in Koksijde and also regularly stayed at the coast in Koksijde. In 1992, Jef Nys used the coastal municipality for part of the locations in the story The Mandolin of Caroline. That same year, the Koksijde Comic Festival held a beautiful exhibition and published a special edition of the comic with extra pages. More than 30 years later, Nys' successors once again honor the connection with Koksijde in the comic series. The skeleton of sperm whale Valentijn received not only a final resting place in the NAVIGO Fisheries Museum in 2024, but the animal has also been immortalized in the Jommeke album Sperm Whale Valentijn published by Standaard Uitgeverij. The cycling route introduces you to a selection of locations that keep the rich fishing stories of Koksijde alive.
