From 1923 to 1992, coal was mined in the Zolder mine. It was here that, on September 30, 1992, the last coal mine in the Benelux definitively closed its doors. The arrival of many foreign workers in the mine quickly gave the municipality a multicultural population.
Touristically, the Zolder racetrack is the main attraction of the municipality.
In the municipality, one can visit several castles such as: Castle Vogelsanck and Castle Meylandt.
Furthermore, the Vijvergebied Midden-Limburg partially lies within the municipality.
