Ciney was formerly a walled town, and as such was of great strategic importance. The town was significant for securing access to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. Intense wars were fought between the County of Namur and the Prince-Bishopric for possession of this fortified town. The most famous of these wars was the Guerre de la Vache, or the 'War of the Cow', which is said to have originated in 1276 after a dispute over the sale of a cow at the market of Ciney.
The only thing that can still be humorously associated today with the 'story of the cow' is the fact that Ciney is home to the 'Association bovine du bleu-blanc Belge', the association of the Belgian Blue cattle breed.
And for those who are not fond of cows: there is also one brown or one light, and by that, we mean the best-drunk Ciney beer.
