Already in Roman times there was habitation at this place, which is located between the Maas and the road from Tongeren to Nijmegen. Traditionally, the Meuse was close to the current basin of Vucht, but over the centuries it moved further and further east. In the Middle Ages, Vucht was owned by the chapter of St. Lambert's Cathedral in Liège.
