From the tower of the abbey, you can catch a glimpse of many monuments around the Grote Markt at a glance. This tower belongs to a Romanesque church built in the 11th century by the Benedictines. Other neighboring monuments include the Church of Our Lady, the Town Hall, St. Martin's Church, St. Augustine's Chapel, and St. Gangulfus Church (the oldest church). You can certainly visit all of them up close from solid ground. The Saint-Trond monument walk (Trudomonumentenwandeling) is an excellent way to do this. Buy the guide and follow the metal rivets on the sidewalk. Elsewhere in the city, don't miss the chance to admire the famous Festraets clock, the beguinage with its beautiful church, and the lovely green decor of the Speelhof.
