Helchteren is a village in the Belgian province of Limburg and a part of Houthalen-Helchteren.
The earliest mention, as Haletra, dates back to 1107. Through Halechtra, this evolved into Helchteren. There are seven explanations for the name: holy house or lime house, barren area, hazel forest, holy tree, strip of land, toe willow area, and juniper berry area.
