Strépy-Bracquegnies is a village whose origins date back very far. Archaeologists have discovered flint mines there that prove the occupation of Strépy, which has been ongoing since prehistoric times. A Roman villa from the 2nd century was also found, and its necropolis was worked with flints.
But the most interesting discovery is certainly that of a Merovingian graveyard with 120 graves. These numerous findings testify to the uninterrupted presence of tribes in the Strépy area.
In the Middle Ages, Strépy mainly drew its wealth from agriculture and livestock farming. From the 19th century, the dynamics kicked in, fueled by the ideas of modern times and the industrial age. They brought about industrial progress that would reach a level of prosperity that would only end at the time of the coal crisis in 1958.
Afterwards, the boat lift was built.
