The name Merelbeke has undergone few changes over the centuries: in 1101, there was already mention of Merlebeke. Over the following centuries, Merelbeke was under the heel of various noble families of the county of Aalst. The inhabitants were repeatedly caught up in the wars and uprisings in which their lords were involved. The most famous
war victim in Merelbeke was Cornelis Sneyssens in 1452, a Ghent standard bearer who would be glorified centuries later in a poem by Albrecht Rodenbach. A memorial plaque remembering Cornelis Sneyssens hangs at the former town hall.
