The name Merelbeke underwent few changes over the centuries: in 1101 there was already talk of Merlebeke. In the course of the following centuries, Merelbeke was under the control of the various noble families of the county of Aalst. Repeatedly, the inhabitants were dragged along in the wars and uprisings in which their lords were involved. The most famous
war victim in Merelbeke was Cornelis Sneyssens in 1452, an ensign from Ghent who would be glorified centuries later in a poem by Albrecht Rodenbach. On the former town hall hangs a plaque that reminds of Cornelis Sneyssens.
