Sapevi che l'allora sindaco di Gand Emile Braun, che tra l'altro era di origine tedesca, negoziò con l'avanzante esercito tedesco affinché Gand non venisse occupata. Era il 1914. C'erano buone ragioni per ciò, poiché nelle città belghe che avevano già conquistato erano stati commessi gravi danni. Per questo i tedeschi richiesero abbastanza. Tra le altre cose, 100.000 sigari, 1.000 bottiglie di acqua minerale, una grande quantità di pastiglie di sublimato - un disinfettante usato per il riutilizzo dei preservativi.
