Ressegem is a part of the Belgian municipality of Herzele, located in the province of East Flanders. The village has no more than 1500 inhabitants.
The name Ressegem originates from "Rasseghem," which means the farm of Rad-so, a diminutive of Rado.
Noteworthy is the Saint Mauritius Church of Ressegem in late Gothic style. Saint Mauritius was a Roman officer and martyr from the third century. His feast day is on September 22.
Ressegem was primarily an agricultural community in the past, and the village core is characterized by three farms, which have been rebuilt in modern times. The rural village views are currently threatened by the construction frenzy of Herzele's builders.
Ressegem is located in the Molenbeek valley, where three motte structures can be found. One of these village mottes is located behind the rectory in Ressegem. The other two are located in Erpe and Heldergem. The motte has been a protected monument since 1981.
The forest of Ressegem, which is connected to the municipality of Aaigem, is currently being redeveloped by the local division of Natuurpunt. The marshy area is being restored naturally. The upper part of the forest is a beech forest. There are also many exotic trees found in this forest.
The region, along with the other districts of Herzele, is becoming popular due to various cycling, walking, and riding routes.
