Zuienkerke is a rural polder municipality, located between the coastal region and Bruges, in the north of West Flanders. Zuienkerke has an area of 5000ha, since the four small municipalities of Houtave, Meetkerke, Nieuwmunster and Zuienkerke were merged in 1977. It has a population of 2800 people. The borough of Houtave has the least number of inhabitants, but is the largest of the four in terms of area. The borough of Zuienkerke, on the other hand, has the largest number of inhabitants (almost 4 times the number of Houtave) and is the second largest in terms of area. The boroughs of Meetkerke and Nieuwmunster are almost half the size of Houtave, but do not differ that much (slightly more) from Houtave in terms of number of inhabitants. Arable farming and livestock farming are the most important economic sectors. The oldest buildings date back to the 13th century. All the village centres have been restored quite recently.
