Beveren is a village in the municipality of Roeselare, in the Belgian province of West Flanders. It has 5615 inhabitants and was an independent municipality until 1965. Beveren is located just northeast of the centre of Roeselare and is partly fused with the city centre. Around 1145 Beveren is mentioned for the first time in historical documents as Beverna. The name is said to refer to the Celtic Bebrona or the Germanic Bivruno. During the Middle Ages, Beveren consisted of several lordships, including Beveren and Onlede. The coat of arms of the village of Beveren is the shield of John of Flanders. The village area was divided between the Kasselrij Ypres and the Liberty of Bruges. In the 18th century there were two lords of the De Beer family, and in 1783 the lordship passed to the De Plotho family.
