The nature reserve, which will eventually be 30 hectares in size, is located on the territory of the city of Oudenaarde and is managed by Natuurpunt and the city of Oudenaarde. The Volkegem forest is protected in Europe as part of the Natura 2000 area 'Forests of the Flemish Ardennes and other South Flemish forests' and is part of the Flemish Ecological Network.
