Ooike

Ooike is a village in the municipality of Wortegem-Petegem, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The village is located on the edge of the Flemish Ardennes.
According to Antonius Sanderus, the Salic law already mentions Edycke. This place name ending in ycke indicates a Celtic origin. According to Carnoy O.N.C.B., vol. 2 p.514 the name Hoica is written in 964. Hoica is Vernacular Latin and is said to mean "little meadow". The mention of Hoika dates back to around 967 according to the yearbook of St. Peter's Abbey in Ghent. Nevertheless, a find of a golden medal of the Roman emperor Vespasian and old road routes show that there was an older habitation in the late Roman period. The following names of this municipality were found successively: Odika around 1038; Odecke about 1175; in a charter of 1232 the name Uka ; in the rent book of the hospital in Oudenaarde of the year 1272 the name Odeke; in 1450 the name Oedeke; in 1455 Oycke in the city accounts, 171 recto, of Oudenaarde; in 1485 Hoeyke according to the diary of superintendents in Oudenaarde; in 1612 the name Oyke in the description of all the Netherlands, Amsterdam; according to the municipal seals from around 1796 to 1917 the name Oycke; according to the municipal seal of 1918 the name Ooike; according to the municipal stamps from 1919 to 1940 the name Oycke returned; from 1941 to the present day the name Ooike.
