In 2018, 600,000 figures will be placed in the provincial domain of De Palingbeek in Ieper, a concept by artist Koen Vanmechelen. This installation spans the no man's land and The Bluff, one of the heaviest fought places of the First World War. Tens of thousands of people from Flanders and the rest of the world contributed to this. Each figure comes with a dog tag, the universal identification system for frontline soldiers. The dog tags each combine the name of a WWI victim with the name of a creator of a figure. Each dog tag thus literally connects the past with the present.
