The Birdsong

Restaurant De Vogelenzang is located in the eponymous neighborhood in 's Gravenwezel. The earliest records show that the building of De Vogelenzang has been operated as an inn since the second half of the 19th century. At that time, there were still 3 inns located at the intersection of Wijnegemsesteenweg and Broekstraat: "Den Vogelenzang", "De Nieuwe Vogelzang", and "De Oude Vogelzang".
"De Nieuwe Vogelzang", previously known as "Den Bosuil", was located to the right of De Vogelenzang, towards 's Gravenwezel. This inn was destroyed by a German bomb in 1945 and was never rebuilt. Currently, this plot is used as a small parking area for restaurant De Vogelenzang.
"De Oude Vogelzang" has now been transformed into the restaurant The Old Birdy. Inn De Vogelenzang, previously known as "Den Tubbax", has had various operators throughout its history, but in 1975 the building faced demolition due to years of vacancy. Loyal customers managed to convince the owner of the property to put it up for sale, and thus Brewery De Koninck became the owner, which is also the current owner of the property. Since 1976, the revamped Vogelenzang has been operated by Agnes Bastiaensen, who transformed the inn into a Café-Restaurant.
In 1991, Agnes Bestiaensen handed over her business to the current owners: the Willems family. They further expanded the establishment, both literally and figuratively. As early as 1992, a veranda was added, and the terrace and kitchen were enlarged. In 2008, the back of the restaurant was extensively renovated, and in 2009, the veranda was given a new look. However, the café area was deliberately left as it was, allowing you to still enjoy a pint at the original bar in "the atmosphere of the past".
