On the left is the Groote Hoef, a former farmhouse of the Abbey of Averbode. Its origins date back a long time. In 990, a certain Count Ansfried is said to have donated his estate in Lommel to the chapter church of Hilvarenbeek. Part of it was the Groote Hoef, which can thus rightly be called the cradle of Lommel. On the one and a half-hectare domain stand three monumental buildings: the house, the sheepfold, and the hay barn. The oldest part of the house dates back to the 15th century. The stable was renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries. The long-house farm has both the living quarters and the stable under one roof, characteristic of the farms in the Kempen region. The overhanging eastern façade is unique in the Kempen. The overhang was introduced solely for status and not to protect the clay wall from the rain. The barn dates from 1736. It features three bays in length, although most barns in the area are rather divided in width. The construction of the barn utilized the technique of clay infill.
