There are documents of the existence of the Castle of Zwijnaarde dating back to 1345. In doing so, the feudal holder renounced his rights in favour of St. Peter's Abbey. But already in the 11-12th century there was mention of a cappella of Zwijnaarde that would refer to this site. The current castle dates from 1922, but is already the 4 known castle building on this site. There used to be a jetty on the Scheldt and there was also a connection to the moat. You can still see a remnant of this on the towpath along the Scheldt in the form of an almost completely overgrown barrel-shaped vault. According to a folk tale, this would be a secret passage that leads to St. Peter's Abbey, but that is not the case.
