During the Middle Ages, Ghent had no less than 30 squares that functioned as harbors or marketplaces. This is why a large number of these squares are located by the water. Examples include the Koornaard (the current Korenmarkt), the Hooiaard, the Gras- and Korenlei, the Vismarkt (current Groentemarkt), and the Wannekensaard (current Groot Kanonplein).
