Design museum Gent is unique in Belgium: it collects and displays design objects, focusing mainly on the period from 1860 to the present day. It is housed in Hotel de Coninck, an impressive example of Flemish civil architecture from the 18th century. The salons featuring authentic parquet floors and wall and ceiling panelling are decorated with a vast collection of stylish furniture.
There was also a new addition to the museum in 1992, which is a sight in itself. It is a modern, airy-looking building behind a reconstructed 18th-century façade. The floor heights are adjustable, enabling the subdivision of the spaces into different levels.
