The Mercator Museum occupies a unique place in Belgium. It tells a chronological story of cartography, from antiquity to the present day. You will come face to face with a rich collection of atlases and mercator the ancient earth globe (1541) and celestial globe (1551). Since the beginning of 2013, they have been included on the list of masterpieces of the Flemish Community. Film projections and interactive touch screens bring all this beauty to a surprising contemporary context.
Did you know that every seagoing vessel still has maps on board based on the Mercator projection. Even the map layout in the GPS is derived from this!
Mercatormuseum, SteM Zwijgershoek and De Salons together form the Municipal Museums Sint-Niklaas.
In May 2021 you could view the most beautiful and the most expensive atlas in the world in the exhibition The Atlas Maior by Blaeu.
