On a stroll with Saint Gilles
At the request of the landowner (13th century), this church was dedicated to Saint Gilles, who led the life of a hermit after he had donated his inheritance to the poor and needy.
Many visitors to this church search for the grave of painter Hans Memling. He was buried in the cemetery that has since disappeared. Only a beautiful memorial around the second pillar still reminds us of the master painter. For his work, you need to visit the museums. But perhaps Memling found inspiration for his religious work in this hall church.
Next to the triptych of Hemelsdaele by Pieter Pourbus are many sculptures from the 19th century, which have been expertly cleaned in recent years and regained their full color. The Torremans chapel also received a thorough cleaning. In the Stations of the Cross, you should take a look at the facial expressions of many figures. The Stations of the Cross are thought-provoking.
You may not have found Memling, but perhaps you found the great painter who used a multicolored palette and various brushes.
