City guide Luc Van Schoors at the Manneken-Pis: “Behind me stands the oldest citizen of Geraardsbergen, named Manneken-Pis. He is 160 years older than his nephew from Brussels.”
“I am a member of the Brotherhood of the Geraardsbergen Manneken-Pis. They promote and protect the statue. That is also necessary, as the Manneken has a tumultuous history,” says Luc. “The Manneken used to be against the town hall, but when it was renovated in 1890, the statue ended up in a coal shed.”
The Manneken seemed to be headed for an inglorious end. “But that was not counted on by the people of Geraardsbergen. They protested strongly. The statue returned and found a place against the kiosk in the Market. Then, after the kiosk was demolished, it got a spot again against the town hall, where it still stands today.”
