The Royal Greenhouses of Laeken are a fine example of Art Nouveau. Due to the enormous size it was possible to plant Congolese palm trees. The Greenhouses were a symbol of the king's colonial power in the Belgian Congo. Exhibiting the plants of that region would illustrate that power. To support that goal, the Greenhouses had to be tall enough. The beginning and end of the support beams rest on the ground, so the conservatory offers the image of a glass dome that is braced by flying buttresses.
They were built by Alphonse Balat and were commissioned by Leopold II.
