Already in the 13th century there was a church at the location where the Church of the Holy Exaltation of the Cross now stands. The shape is quite similar. According to a legend, the cross that you can still see in the church was pulled from the water by the fishermen of Wenduine. On the 2nd Pentecost, the cross is still carried along during the sea dedication every year.
