Did you know that Albert Einstein was once a resident of De Haan? Albert Einstein lived in De Haan for several months in 1933. After a stay as a guest professor in the United States, he arrived at the Port of Antwerp on his way back to Germany in March 1933. Since Adolf Hitler had been elected in Germany that same month, the Einstein couple decided not to return and moved to De Haan, where they lived in the left part of the double villa 'Savoyarde' on Shakespearelaan. Later, his stepdaughter Margot, his assistant Walther Mayer, and his secretary Helen Dukas also came to live with them. Ultimately, it also became too dangerous for Einstein in Belgium, and on September 9, 1933, he left De Haan incognito, heading towards England where he stayed for some time. On October 17, 1933, he left for good to the United States.
