At the location where the Tielt town hall now stands, Margaretha of Constantinople allowed the establishment of a day shelter for poor pilgrims and the sick. The hospital was run by the Alexian Sisters. After the French Revolution, the building was used as the main guardhouse of the gendarmerie and as a peace court. Starting in 1836, the Apostolic Sisters from Bruges took up residence there and founded a school for learning and work. In 1875, the city services moved in, and it would henceforth become the 'town hall.' The neoclassical facade in French limestone is the design of architect Croquison. In 2009, the town hall was fully renovated and expanded, as was the archive. Old and new connect to create an open service environment. The Tielt Leisure Point is also housed here.
Feel free to drop by via the Alexianenplein and enter the impressive entrance hall.
