On the Coudenberg once stood the Coudenberg Palace, one of the most prestigious buildings in Europe. Here, the Order of the Golden Fleece held its meetings. Philip the Good initiated the construction of an impressive palace in the 15th century. From here, he would manage the entire realm of the Netherlands. Albrecht Dürer declared that he had seen no such splendor and wealth anywhere else. Destroyed by a fire in February 1731, the ruins of the palace were demolished more than 40 years later. It is now the most important archaeological site in Brussels. On the site where the chapel once stood, the "BELvue museum" now stands, a museum about the history of Belgium.
