According to local tradition, the farm "Stork's Nest", on the edge of the valuable Abeek valley, is the birthplace of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The original building dated from the 13th century but was rebuilt in 1866 after a fire.
In the 15th century, the "Stork's Nest" was owned by the Counts of Hoorn. A tree-lined avenue connected the farm to a water mill along the Abeek. This watermill was transferred to the Provincial Open Air Museum in Bokrijk
