The Stekense Vaart or the Parma Canal is a watercourse that originated at the end of the 16th century. Alexander Farnese, duke of Parma, gave the first spade stab on 21 October 1584. He had a canal dug from Stekene to Kallo.
Right through the potentially quiet area that is situated around this canal, a quiet path (6 km) was built on the dike in 2005, creating a very pleasant walking and cycling connection between Stekene, the borough of Klein-Sinaai and St-Niklaas. The surrounding landscape offers vast and exceptionally beautiful views. In 2006, poetry boards were placed along the path with poems by Stekenaar Willem Persoon.
