Van Loo leads me into the Warandepark, the location of Philip's paradisiacal gardens. The park was later raised to the same level as the later royal district, except for one spot that lies meters lower. "Holy ground!" says Van Loo: here Philip the Good and his son Charles the Bold walked, Maria of Burgundy frolicked, and Philip's menagerie was housed, with wild boars, ostriches, swans, up to a dromedary and lions. Monseigneur of Burgundy liked to impress his guests. As I mentally travel back in time, I get tapped on the shoulder: "Are you gay, are you waiting for someone?", a boy asks me. This place, once a grand garden, apparently has a different reputation today.
